Johnson Expects Progress Within 10 Days

Manager Gary Johnson has said he would expect Yeovil to make some progress in terms of transfers over the coming 10 days as discussions continue with a number of targets, especially our search for two goalkeepers following the departures this summer of Marek Stech and Chris Dunn.

Speaking to the Western Gazette Johnson said we had made our targets and formulated a short list, but these things can always take some time, and especially in the goalkeeping area he feels there is no great rush to sign two people permanently, because there is always more freedom between the sticks to secure loan signings.

'We're not turning down any discussions with anyone wanting to join us full time, but especially with goalkeepers, there's always that option that you can take someone on loan.'

Johnson adds that obviously it's always preferable to have people contracted to the club, because then you haven't got to worry about not being able to extend their deals, not having them called back - especially if in good form - and so on, but he does have to acknowledge that for keepers there is always an 'abundance' of talent that sometimes can't even get on the bench at clubs in the two divisions above us.

Also, it's difficult to find a goalkeeper who wants to come in as a number 2 because they are in the game to play first team football.

Having already made a few early moves for Nathan Smith and Aaron Martin, as well as James Hayter signing his extended deal, others haven't signed their tabled contracts and are increasingly likely to be not returning, so clearly our squad needs work and if Johnson can get people in over the next ten days ahead of us beginning pre season training, they will at least have as long as possible to get up to speed and get on board with what he wants from them and his tactics etc.

That is his aim as he does want at least the bulk of the team together, if not all of them, but July 1st and idealistically he comments that we 'probably need at least one extra player in each department.'
