What a miserable way for The Glovers to end the SkyBet Championship adventure, a fairytale finale wasn't possible with Middlesbrough winning 4-1 at Huish Park on Saturday.
Dreams of a positive swansong were what I had but it wasn't to be.
Gary Johnson gave plenty of those that helped us into the SkyBet Championship a chance to end the season in the team, he's done this throughout the season though really, but Johnson himself was missing with him serving a one match touchline ban issued after the defeat to Charlton.
Sam Foley was one given a chance, after his recent loan recall from Shrewsbury, and he forced Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jason Steele into an early save.
Middlesbrough were soon threatening though Danny Graham, who twice had chances, but it was James Hayter who had the best chance, to that point, but his lob made Steele make a good save to deny him.
Control was then taken by Middlesbrough.
Emmanuel Ledesma's shot was only parried by Marek Stech allowing Graham to follow up to put Middlesbrough into the lead with the crossbar denying Ledesma the chance to extend that and Albert Adomah having an effort also saved by Stech.
The Glovers managed to level though when Hayter made the most of a chance that dropped into his path, Sam Hoskins effort was deflected to him and it left the veteran striker with a chance to draw us level.
Middlesbrough restored their lead within minutes though.
Graham turned provider this time to set up Ledesma to score before a long ball from Steele found its way through to Lee Tomlin to make it three before the break as he rounded Stech to slot home.
There wasn't any let up for us in the second half either as Middlesbrough kept up the pressure on us and showed no misery as they kept coming forward hoping to add to the scoreline and inflict more misery upon us.
Sure enough, a mere two minutes into the half, Ledesma showed his acrobatic ability to volley in the fourth from an Adam Reach cross.
The Glovers were spared a fifth though with Graham missing a chance he would have been expected to take as he incredibly poked wide a Tomlin lay off from a mere five yards.
It mattered not though in the end as Middlesbrough repeated the 4-1 win they secured in the first ever league meetings between the sides earlier this season with a repeat dose for us as our season ended in miserable fashion.
What a disappointing way to end the season.
You can argue that this game made little difference but it's definitely not the way I would have wanted us to go into the summer, and back into the SkyBet League 1, and I'm sure it isn't the way that Johnson wanted either.
