Accrington Stanley 1 Glovers 1 - Report
The Crown Ground
December 6th 2014. 15:00
An FA Cup upset was something that The Glovers were keen to avoid on Saturday against SkyBet League 2 opponents Accrington Stanley, which we managed.
That upset was avoided at the Crown Ground but we had to be content with a 1-1 draw and a replay at Huish Park will now determine who takes a place in the third round. We know that we'll be in that pot for the third round draw on Monday though.
Accrington had a great early chance when Huddersfield Town loanee Matt Crooks was put clean through with only our own Aston Villa loanee goalkeeper Jed Steer to beat. Technically Crooks beat him but he also missed the target as he shot wide.
The Glovers made him, and Accrington, regret that miss.
As we came into the game more we offered more of a threat and took the lead through our most potent source of goals recently Jordan Clarke. His latest goal came when he beat his marker to a Sam Foley freekick to give as the lead.
The second half brought improvement from Accrington with a couple of penalty shouts rejected by the referee and Piero Mingoia seeing his effort cleared off the line as the SkyBet League 2 side chased an equalised.
Accrington duly found that equalised that they deserved as their pressure, and a long ball, made all the difference with Rob Atkinson setting up Tom Aldred who scored.
I don't think either side really wanted a replay, but both sides wanted to win, that was clear as we both went for a winner in a frantic end to the game. Accrington almost got this when Shay McCartan headed against the post with Accrington goalkeeper Jack Rose tipping over Stephen Arthurworrey's injury time header.
That potential big money third round tie remains on, we'll find out on Monday night who it could be when the draw is made but we've still got a job to do and it's not a forgone conclusion that we'll win the replay at Huish Park at all.
