Glovers 1 Accrington Stanley 0 - Report
December 16th 2014. 19:45
It was left late but it was eventually The Glovers that saw off SkyBet League 2 side Accrington Stanley on Tuesday to book our FA Cup third round tie with Manchester United at Huish Park in January.
Extra time was looking a distinct possibility as full time drew ever nearer but two goals in the final six minutes were enough to give us a 2-0 win in the second round replay at Huish Park.
With Manchester United the home incentive for both sides in the third round this second round replay was always likely to be a nervy and tense tie, which it was with the chances at something of a premium with both sides knowing exactly what was at stake, from a financial point as much as anything.
Tom Aldred was almost the man to give us the lead as a header ended up going just wide of his own goal with a mistake at the other end from Brendan Moloney seeing Marcus Carver intercept his back pass but fortunately goalkeeper Jed Steer saved the day.
When Accrington hit the crossbar and the rebounded wasn't followed up it seemed like it would be our night. Shay McCartan saw his effort come back off the crossbar but as Matt Crooks followed up he couldn't force his header home.
It wasn't much after that we broke through.
Six minutes from time Simon Gillett took the ball down on his chest before thumping home from outside of the penalty area to give us the lead, and of course break Accrington hearts.
The Glovers made absolutely sure that it would be us entertaining the multiple Premier League and FA Cup winners in January when Kieffer Moore continued his return from injury with another appearance from the substitutes bench and another goal when he headed home two minutes from time.
